Dark Shadows was a soap opera created by Dan Curtis, which aired from 1967-71. The show was well known for its corny dialogue, cheap sets, horrific plotlines and goofy monsters.

Originally a typical soap opera that centered on a young orphaned woman who has been hired by the enigmatic Collins Family as a nanny, but because of declining ratings the show began to experiment with supernatural storylines.

It was the introduction of the vampire Barnabas Collins that proved the most successful, though, and the show’s transformation was complete. The series stock-and-trade was to retool plots and characters from classic horror novels and short stories and incorporate them into their own storylines.
